How do enzymes and ATP keep your cells running?

Enzymes and ATP work together as enzymes lower activation energy while ATP couples energy release to cellular work. The quiz covers metabolism, activation energy, glycolysis, oxygen's role in electron transport, ATP synthase, the Calvin cycle, and ATP structure. See how you do on the questions.

Question 1

What does metabolism include?

Metabolism refers to cellular chemical processes.

Source excerpt
This complex web of chemical changes that happen within a living organism is known as metabolism.

Question 2

How can cells maintain organization without violating thermodynamics?

A cell is an open system, with changes affecting its surroundings.

Source excerpt
Therefore, even if a cell becomes more organized, the total entropy of the universe still increases because of the heat the cell gives off.

Question 3

What is activation energy?

Activation energy is the initial barrier to reaction.

Source excerpt
This initial investment of energy required to start a reaction is known as activation energy. It acts as a barrier that prevents molecules from reacting randomly and keeps your body's structures stable.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 4

How do enzymes speed reactions?

Catalysis lowers the barrier without consuming the enzyme.

Source excerpt
By lowering the activation energy, enzymes allow life to exist at normal temperatures. They are the efficient, reusable tools that drive your entire metabolism.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 5

How many phosphate groups does ATP contain?

ATP is adenosine triphosphate.

Source excerpt
The name ATP tells us exactly what the molecule is made of: one adenosine and three phosphate groups.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 6

What molecule can cells recycle back into ATP?

Energy is used to add phosphate back to ADP.

Source excerpt
Instead, cells solve this problem by recycling ADP back into ATP.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 7

What process begins the breakdown of glucose during cellular respiration?

Glycolysis splits glucose into smaller molecules.

Source excerpt
Glycolysis is the essential first step. It prepares the sugar by splitting it into smaller pieces (pyruvate) that can actually enter the mitochondria. It also provides a small, immediate 'emergency' supply of ATP.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 8

What role does oxygen play in aerobic electron transport?

Oxygen acts as the terminal electron acceptor.

Source excerpt
This is where oxygen performs its most critical role. It acts as the final electron acceptor.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 9

What powers ATP synthase during mitochondrial respiration?

Electron transport builds the gradient used in ATP synthesis.

Source excerpt
The proteins in the electron transport chain act like miniature pumps. They use the energy released by the moving electrons to pump hydrogen ions across the mitochondrial membrane. This creates a 'pressure' or gradient that the cell then uses to spin a molecular motor that builds ATP.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 10

What does the Calvin cycle use as its carbon source?

Carbon fixation incorporates carbon dioxide into organic molecules.

Source excerpt
Leaves have tiny pores called stomata. These pores open to let carbon dioxide gas diffuse from the air into the internal spaces of the leaf, where it can reach the chloroplasts for the Calvin cycle.

Energy transfer in cells

Metabolism includes the chemical reactions of a living cell. Those reactions transform matter and transfer energy rather than creating energy from nothing. Cells maintain organized structures by taking in energy and releasing heat and other products to their surroundings. Local order in an organism is compatible with increasing total entropy.

Enzymes speed reactions by lowering activation energy, the barrier a reaction must overcome. They do not supply the reaction's energy or get used up as fuel. ATP helps couple energy-releasing processes to cellular work. Hydrolysis converts ATP to ADP and phosphate, and cells use energy to regenerate ATP.

Fuel, oxygen and light

During glycolysis, glucose is split into smaller molecules, producing some ATP and loading electron carriers. In aerobic respiration, further reactions transfer electrons through a chain. Oxygen accepts electrons at the end. Energy from electron transfer helps establish an ion gradient, which ATP synthase uses to produce ATP.

Photosynthesis begins with light absorption by pigments such as chlorophyll. Light reactions produce ATP and electron carriers used in carbon fixation. The Calvin cycle builds organic molecules from carbon dioxide using those products. It does not directly capture light, but depends on the chemical supplies generated by the light reactions.

Source excerpt
The second stage is the Calvin cycle, which uses that stored energy to build organic molecules.
