Question 1

What is hindsight bias?

Hindsight bias is the tendency to view an outcome as obvious or foreseeable after it has already occurred.

Source excerpt
This tendency to believe, after learning an outcome, that you would have foreseen it is known as hindsight bias.

Question 2

What serves as a testable prediction derived directly from a theory?

A hypothesis is a testable prediction produced by the underlying logic of a theory.

Source excerpt
A hypothesis is a testable prediction, usually derived directly from the logic of the theory.

Question 3

Why do researchers rely on operational definitions?

Operational definitions specify measurement or manipulation procedures clearly enough for other researchers to understand and attempt to repeat them.

Source excerpt
To solve this, researchers use an operational definition, which is a carefully worded statement of the exact procedures used in a study.

Question 4

Which sampling method gives each population member an equal chance of selection?

Random sampling ensures that every individual in the target population has an equal likelihood of being included.

Source excerpt
To make the sample fair, scientists use a random sample, where every member of the population has an equal chance of being picked.

Question 5

If two variables decrease together in tandem, what kind of relationship exists?

A positive correlation occurs when two variables move in the same direction, whether both increase or both decrease.

Source excerpt
In both cases, the variables are 'teaming up' and moving together, whether they are both going up or both going down.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 6

What distinguishes a controlled experiment from an observational correlation study?

Manipulation with appropriate controls helps test causal hypotheses. A correlation study records associations without that experimental manipulation.

Source excerpt
The specific factor that the researcher chooses to change or control is called the independent variable.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 7

In an experiment testing sleep on memory scores, what is the independent variable?

The independent variable is the factor directly controlled or manipulated by the researcher.

Source excerpt
One group is told to sleep for 8 hours, while another group is woken up after only 4 hours. The amount of sleep is the independent variable here.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 8

What is the purpose of random assignment to experimental conditions?

Random assignment helps balance participant differences on average. Chance differences can remain.

Source excerpt
To prevent this, researchers use random assignment, which means placing participants into groups purely by chance.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 9

What is a double-blind procedure?

In a double-blind design, both participants and research staff remain uninformed about treatment assignments to prevent bias.

Source excerpt
In a double-blind procedure, both the participants and the research staff are ignorant about who received the real treatment and who received the placebo.

From the Knowverse course text.

Question 10

What is debriefing after a psychology study?

Debriefing explains the study after participation, including its purpose and any deception, rather than being a substitute for consent beforehand.

Source excerpt
Debriefing is the post-experimental explanation where the researcher reveals the true purpose of the study.

Predictions and measurements

Hindsight bias makes a known outcome feel predictable after the fact. Overconfidence can make a judgment seem more accurate than it is. Psychological research tests claims instead of relying on those feelings. A theory organizes explanations, while a hypothesis states a prediction that observations can support or challenge.

An operational definition states how a concept will be measured or manipulated in a study. That detail helps other researchers understand and repeat the procedure. Sampling concerns who enters a study. A simple random sample gives each member of the defined population an equal chance of selection, unlike recruiting whoever is easiest to reach.

Comparisons and causal claims

Correlation describes how variables vary together. A positive correlation means their values tend to move in the same direction, even when both decrease. Correlation alone does not establish causation. Another variable may influence both, or the direction of influence may differ from the explanation a researcher first considers.

In a controlled experiment, the researcher manipulates an independent variable and measures a dependent variable. Random assignment reduces systematic differences between groups on average, without guaranteeing identical groups. Blinding can limit expectations influencing results. Participants also need ethical safeguards, and debriefing explains the study after participation, including any deception that was used.
