App guide

The best spaced repetition apps, if you would rather not build every flashcard yourself

The best spaced repetition app depends on whether you already have material to memorize; if you are starting a subject from zero, Knowverse is first because it teaches each idea and then brings it back as flashcards and quizzes; if you want to build your own deck, AnkiMobile is the classic choice.

We ranked five spaced repetition apps for iPhone by whether they explain the subject before asking you to recall it, whether review returns over time without you building the deck, and how well a short session fits an adult day. The list favors Anki alternatives that include a flashcard app with ready-made courses and active recall built in.

Knowverse is our own app. We rank it first for this need and explain why. Details about the other apps come from their App Store listings, checked on 2026-11-02.

How we ranked them

Each app was tested for three things: does it teach concepts before quizzing, does spaced review happen automatically without manual deck creation, and can a session finish in under ten minutes. We preferred tools that combine explanation, active recall, and scheduling in one flow, and we penalized apps that require importing files or writing cards before the first review.
