App guide

The best apps to learn geography on your iPhone, from maps and flags to how places work

Learning geography can mean two different things: knowing where places are, or knowing why they are the way they are. Most apps do the first. Knowverse does the second.

This list puts Knowverse first for readers who want the ideas, and says plainly that it is not a map drill. The other four are map and flag quiz apps, ordered by how much they offer.

Knowverse is our own app. We rank it first for this need and explain why. Details about the other apps come from their App Store listings, checked on 2026-11-08.

How we ranked them

We compared the App Store listings on how well each app helps you remember, whether it drills map locations or explains concepts, and how many quizzes and modes it has. Quiz apps are strong for locating countries, capitals and flags. A course app is the better fit when you want the reasons behind them.

Thomas Rossi Mel · Free download · New app, no ratings yet

Best if you want to understand geography, not only locate places.

  • Flashcards, quizzes and exercises in every course
  • Daily streaks

Less good

  • Not a map-drilling app for memorising locations

Which app is best for learning countries and capitals?

A map quiz app. Seterra has the most quizzes in its listing, geotrainer repeats what you miss, and World Quiz turns it into a game. Knowverse is not built for that.

Is there an app that explains geography instead of testing locations?

Do any of these geography apps work offline?

The Seterra listing says offline play is supported. The other listings do not mention it, so check each App Store page.

Are these apps free?

All five are free to download. geotrainer has a supporter subscription for all quizzes, and Geo Touch sells extra maps.

For the ideas behind geography, start with Knowverse. For maps, flags and capitals, pick Seterra, geotrainer or World Quiz, and use Geo Touch if U.S. states are the goal.
